Navigating the Website

Welcome to the IWBC Toronto 2010 website.  We're very excited to be hosting this event this year and we hope to welcome lots of new people to enjoy Toronto and meet fellow brass players from around the world.  There's lots of opportunity to get involved...

Under the "Contact Us" page of this website, you'll find a forum where we invite everyone to make suggestions regarding what you would like to see at the conference, talk about issues and generally spread the excitement of the event.  While you're on the "Contact Us" page, why not fill in the volunteer form, email it or fax it back and get involved!

Would you like to share a story about a woman brass player that has inspired you or read memories and tributes that other folks have shared?  Under the "Guest Artist" page, we have created a "Women of Note" tab.  Check it out -- a few people have already got the ball rolling.  Our plan is to eventually compile all of these lovely stories and create a keepsake journal as our gift to each of you for registering for the conference.

Speaking of registration, the form is now ready.  There are three ways to register:

Print out the pdf file on the registration page and fax back to us with your credit card

Print out the pdf file and mail to us with your payment

Complete the online registration form

We're looking forward to receiving hundreds of registrations from around the world.

Guest Artists Interviews

Check here regularly for exclusive interviews with one of our guest artists.  These interviews will be conducted by Janet Anderson.  Janet has been a member of the Canadian Opera Company since 2003 and is an active freelance horn player.

She has performed with groups such as the Orchestra of the National Ballet of Canada, Windsor Symphony and the Mirvish Production of the Sound of Music.  As well as leading a private teaching studio, Janet is a member of the faculty of the National Music Camp of Canada.  Janet is a graduate of the Music program at McGill University.

Allene Hackleman

Allene Hackleman shares with us her mental and physical preparations for a major performance;

Janet Anderson:  Tell us about your mentors and role models. Who has inspired you?

Allene Hackleman:  Both of my parents have been an inspiration in different ways.  My father has obviously taught me a lot about playing the horn, but still we are very different kinds of players and musicians.  He taught me to be my own kind of musician.  What I admire most about him is his incredible strength and absolutely unshakeable level of focus.  I wish those traits were genetic!  My mother is not naturally a tough kind of person but when challenges arise, she always finds some sort of toughness within and rises to the occasion.  That is the best kind of strength.  My teacher, Randy Gardner, taught me the value of patience, discipline, and hard work in music and for that I am so grateful!

JA:  What do you do to mentally prepare for a major performance?

AH:  I listen to the music a lot and sing it as much as I can – when I’m walking or doing mundane tasks, so that I really ‘own’ my interpretation of it without the distraction of playing the horn (and what a big distraction that is!).  Right now I am rereading a book called ‘The New Toughness Training for Sports’, which is basically a mental training programme for athletes to help them perform at the uppermost limits of their potential, and it relates perfectly to what we as musicians do – after all, we’re all performers, right?

JA:  What do you do to physically prepare for a major performance? (running, yoga etc)

AH:  I walk to work every day to keep in shape a bit – it’s a brisk 40-minute walk, and it’s uphill both ways (I descend into the Edmonton river valley and back up out of it)!  I try and do yoga regularly because I find it really helps with body awareness and learning to release tension, as well as utilising full breathing capacity.  I also walk a lot with my dog, Daisy.

JA:  What’s on your ipod?

AH:  It’s a pretty eclectic mix –

Some high energy pop music to help me keep the pace up when I’m walking to work, recordings of whatever pieces I might be working on for orchestra, auditions or solo performances, and usually some lieder of some sort for inspiration – I love vocal music.  Schubert and Schumann are my favourites!

President's Greeting

Welcome to the web site of the 2010 International Women’s Brass Conference. We are extremely grateful to our conference co-hosts, Joan Watson and Denny Christianson, for taking on the planning and execution of this our first truly international conference. Joan, Conference Coordinator Mary Flynn and a massive team of volunteers are diligently working to plan an inviting, exciting and educational experience for us at Humber College in Toronto.

I invite you to look around the web site, take part in the Susan Slaughter International Solo Brass Competition and register to attend this spectacular event. Be sure to join our email list and take part in the forum too. I would be remiss if I did not also recognize the hard work of Gail Robertson who recently made the difficult decision to resign as President of the IWBC.

Gail contributed an immense amount of time to the planning of this conference and her tireless support of this endeavor is indeed noteworthy. Be sure to register early and I look forward to seeing you in Toronto, catching up with old friends and making many new ones.

Cheers!
Kelly Watkins,
IWBC President

Host of the 2010 IWBC: Joan Watson

To everyone visiting our IWBC Toronto 2010 site, I extend a generous welcome to join us on an exciting journey. This journey will last the better part of a year and will be one of building a community of like-minded people via the website and eventually the conference itself.

This conference is an opportunity for all of us to commune, enthuse and share our passion for brass playing in all its forms and in all its levels. We all like to make "noise" or we wouldn't be brass players. So let's hear it. Voice your stories here.

Encourage everyone you love to come and participate, party and make music! Our Lakeside community will welcome you with open arms next June. You will have the time of your life and memories to inspire you for years to come.

Susan Slaughter, founder of IWBC

While this is 2010, the excitement, awareness, and energy is always the same. Of what am I speaking???

Attending the IWBC conference is a life changing event. Nowhere else, not the ITG, ITA, IHS will you encounter so many outstanding women brass musicians on every brass instrument.

Nowhere else may you speak openly about your struggles in the music industry and hear how others have overcome their "challenges" without being criticized. If you have not attended any of our other IWBC conferences, then make this one your very first.

You will leave the conference inspired by what women brass musicians from all over the world have and are achieving. Your "batteries" will be recharged to "carry on" and continue to pursue YOUR DREAM.

Please join us this Summer.

Susan Slaughter,
founder IWBC
and
Principal Trumpet
Saint Louis Symphony
